In the web hosting industry there are many types of servers offered by web hosting providers, however the two most popular are shared and dedicated servers. Although both are equally as common, there are some very fundamental differences between the two. First, we should start by saying that dedicated servers are a costlier, yet more personalized and effective server solution.

Why not Shared?

Shared servers can be used by small business owners and personal site owners, but are generally not recommended for a long term business site. The reason for this is because a shared server is being shared by thousands of individuals at all times. Therefore, the users of a shared server bear much of the same responsibility, and if one site on the server is found guilty of nefarious acts, then the rest of the sites on the server can be shutdown as well. When this is observed it is obvious why a dedicated server would be preferable. However, there are some disadvantages to using a dedicated server as well. There are also plenty of reasons why dedicated servers are one of the most popular server solutions. To make the right decision you’ll need to review the pros and cons of a dedicated server.

Pros of a Dedicated Server

The first and most obvious advantage of a dedicated server is that you are receiving a server that is dedicated only to your website and is not impacted by the actions of other unrelated websites. Dedicated servers give your your own dedicated IP address, more bandwidth, more server space, and better overall performance. Dedicated servers also provide secure environments for processing online payments. You also cannot be held accountable for the actions of another site owner, since all of your servers activities are confined to your sites usage only.

Cons of Dedicated Hosting

The first negative aspect of dedicated hotting that comes to mind is the price. To receive all of the wonderful aforementioned features, the user will need to pay accordingly. As they say – you get what you pay for. Fortunately, you don’t have to immediately spend a lot of money to get your dedicated server going. You can start with a minimal plan, as there are usually three kinds of dedicated hosting to choose from. The cheapest is managed dedicated hosting, which puts the administrative responsibilities in the hands of the web hosting company, which provides less features for the end user, but ultimately more ease-of-use.

Conclusion

After reviewing the above information you’re probably aiming towards a dedicated server. However, you should keep in mind that your final decision should be based entirely upon you situation as an individual. If you are planning on running a blog or other personal website, then a dedicated server will not be needed. If you’re unsure about how much you want your business to expand, or how much it will expand, then you may want to consider another option such as reseller hosting which gives you access to virtually unlimited server resources while also letting your sell some of these resources for profit when you do not need them all.
